    Biscoe pool goes statewide

There are no bathing beauties posing on the pages of the 2009 North Carolina Hometown Calendar, published by the N. C. League of Municipalities. The closest thing, other than kids frolicking in the surf at Nags Head, is the big color photo of the swimming pool at Biscoe’s Deaton-Monroe Park, representing the month of May.

The town submitted the photo taken last year by lifeguard Mayer McKinley, and town officials, who are justly proud of the town’s pool, were pleased it was chosen for the calendar.

Pool season in Biscoe began Memorial Day weekend, with the pool open weekends until school lets out for the summer. Regular summer hours once vacation time begins are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, Saturdays noon to 6 p.m. and Sundays 1 to 6 p.m. Admission for the day is $2 per person.

The pool is also open for evening public swimming on Friday nights from 7 to 9 at a cost of $1 per person.

The pool can also be reserved for private parties in the evening on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Cost for the two-hour time slots is $75.

Mark Miller, town parks and recreation director, has also published the schedule for swimming lessons, open for youth who have completed kindergarten or higher. Four two-week sessions are available beginning June 15, June 29, July 13 and July 28 at a cost of $30. Each session will provide classes either from 9-9:45 a.m. or 5-5:45 p.m.

Class size is limited to 20 per session and will be divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced groups. Signup is on a first come, first served basis, with payment reserving a spot in the popular classes. Miller said if there is enough interest he will also hold adult and pre-school classes as well.

Biscoe’s pool is a popular summer destination for individuals, families, church groups and various youth groups, including day care centers, who enjoy the well-maintained facility and concession stand. Admissions have grown dramatically over the years, with nearly 17,000 admissions tallied during the 2008 pool season.

For information about swimming classes or general pool questions, contact Miller, who also teaches business education at East Montgomery High School, at 220-0410 (after 3 p.m.) or 428-4138 after June 12.
