Mt. Gilead downtown will be booming this weekend as the community holds it first September Fest. Music, food, vendors, crafts and a host of kid’s activities will fill the area around downtown on Saturday from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.
The September Fest committee has lined up musical entertainment for the entire day beginning at 10 a.m. with the Lao Dancers. Following them will be the Singing Stars, D.J. Joey Gathings, the Carolina Cloggers, D.J. Night Shift, The Awakening, Uwharrie Dancers, High Steppers and the ending event being national award winning shaggers Archie and Shelia Chase.
The Methodist Church will be the site of the kid’s events with the lawn filled with a moon bounce, a big blowup slide, face painting and a variety of games.
Vendors will be on site selling their wares including food to suit most anyone’s taste buds. According to Sandy Treece some of the food choices will be barbecued chicken, barbecue, fish, funnel cakes, hot dogs and hamburgers. Treece said the committee has secured 43 vendors for the event including Ken Fritts with his custom made guns and Bobby Morris with his custom made knives. Several jewelry makers and other artists have also signed up for the event. Six antique vendors will be in front of the antique mall on Main Street.
Several groups will be holding fundraisers at the event as well, including the Mt. Gilead Civitans who are selling commemorative bricks for the downtown area, a bake sale fundraiser for the Mt. Gilead Food Pantry and a fundraiser for the upcoming Mt. Gilead Street Dance.
Also going on that day in Mt. Gilead will be the celebration of Mt. Gilead Museum’s 10-year anniversary. Throughout the day there will be hand building pottery demonstrations and quilting demonstrations.
