A Mt. Gilead police officer, Tony Martino, has resigned from his position after being placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
According to reports Martino had taken a department owned SKS rifle and pawned it at a Pawn Shop in Monroe. Martino had also pawned his department issued shotgun and town radio. The department learned of the pawning after an officer that works both at the pawnshop and at the Mt. Gilead Police Department noticed Martino’s name on some pawn tickets.
Martino had worked for the department for approximately two years. The initial investigation began three weeks ago and was turned over to the District Attorney’s office on Monday.
