For the 26th straight summer, kids could be seen heading to the East Montgomery High School gym to hone their basketball skills in the annual Montgomery County Basketball Camp. This year’s camp ran June 13 through 16 with college coaches speaking or the always entertaining Austin Lehman displaying his ball handling skills. Once again the camp’s director was Erie “Buggy” Greene, head boys basketball coach at East Montgomery.
This year’s camp had 60 campers and they kicked off the week listening to Fayetteville State University head basketball coach Alphonza Kee speaking about shooting. On the following day Sandhills Community College head basketball coach Mike Apple spoke to the campers. Wednesday, Lehman put on his ball handling show, along with speaking about shooting mechanics and work ethics. The final day of camp was competition day with campers vying to be champions in free throw shooting, one-on-one, and the hot shot competition.
In the free throw competition, Keshon Ingram won the grades 3-4, Keon McBride grades 5-6, Danasia Dumas girls grades 7-10, C.J. Callahan boys grades 7-8 and Chae Cole boys grades 9-10.
In the one-on-one competition, Kasoni Ingram grades 3-4, Ke’shawn Baldwin grades 4-5, Dumas girls grades 7-10, Cameron Watkins boys grades 7-8 and Dalton Sluder boys grades 9-10.
In the hot shot competition, Kasoni Ingram grades 3-4, Keon McBride grades 5-6, Shayla Bowden girls grades 7-10, Watkins boys grades 7-8 and Cole boys grades 9-10.
Jailyn Kinch was selected as the Outstanding Camper.
Each day a camper was selected Best Hustler/Best Attitude from each team. The first day Chandler Dozier was selected for St. Andrews, Niculus Taffermeyers (Fayetteville State), Khalica Christian (Dreams), Megan Chulln (Sparks), Jackson Dozier (Mavs) and Cordero Steele (Bobcats).
The second day selections were Kiana Barrett (St. Andrews), Kasoni Ingram (Fayetteville State), Aleka Little (Dreams), Raegan Brewer (Sparks), Aaron Flowers (Mavs) and Aaron Richardson (Bobcats). Wednesday’s winners were Damon Binns (St. Andrews), Barrett Dozier (Fayetteville State), Jeyvan Quick (Dreams), Morrison Bralen (Mavs) and Cameron Watkins (Bobcats).
The rest of the camp’s staff were Mike Stancil (EMHS boys junior varsity coach), Ray Smith (former EMHS standout), C.J. Robinson (former EMHS standout), Michael Dunkins (former EMHS standout and current player at St. Andrews), Andrew Terry (head boys basketball coach at East Middle School), Angie Tofflemeyer (head girls basketball coach West Middle School), Tyrone Horne (boys junior varsity coach at West Montgomery High School and former professional baseball player), Ronald Morgan (former WMHS standout), Chad Smith (EMHS player), Jeremy Pegues (EMHS player), Quan Johnson (EMHS player) and Hubert Lindsay (general manager of basketball operations).
