Peach Festival 2020 in Candor has been canceled. Mayor Phillip Hearne made the announcement at the regular meeting of the board of commissioners Monday night.

Hearne said the local businesses, the major sponsors of the festival, have taken a big hit already with the economy and are not in a position to sign on this year.

“Also,” Hearne said, “we are moving slowly in restarting in Candor. We need to be cautious to protect our town and its citizens.”

Hearne explained that the town staff has not had time to make plans, that vendors are uncertain and that he does not believe the worst of the pandemic is over yet.

“We have seen a recent uptick in positive tests, especially in the Hispanic community,” he said. All those factors, along with an uncertain budget for the coming year, have added to the decision to cancel the festival.
