CHARLES ALBERT NEWSOM

 

Charles Albert Newsom, 79, of Troy, passed away Monday, August 12, 2019 at Hospice Haven, Rockingham.

Mr. Newsom was born in High Point, son of Albert Hearst Newsom and Elon Green Newsom.

Charles was active in the Boy Scouts and was a proud Eagle Scout. He served in the Army Reserves during the Vietnam era. He studied Business Administration at Kings College in Charlotte and earned his certificate in Horology (watchmaking) at Bradley University in Illinois. He partnered with his father and eventually became the sole owner of Newsom’s Jewelers in Troy until he retired in 1999. He was a Registered Jeweler with the American Gem Society and a licensed N.C. Real Estate Broker. He was a member of the Montgomery County Jaycees, Troy Lion’s Club and very active in Rotary International. He was also a Paul Harris Fellow. He served on the Montgomery County Board of Education. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Troy, and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Charles enjoyed life, the company of others and often filled a room with laughter. He loved the beach and cruising around in his golf cart with his UNC flag. He enjoyed listening and dancing to beach music. He would never miss an opportunity to eat at K&W.

He is survived by former spouse and friend, Peggy Newsom of Troy; daughters, Tracy Garner (Max) of Troy, Charlotte Nunez-Wolff (Miguel) of Chapel Hill and Dana Nelson (Robert) of Troy; grandchildren, Hannah Butler, Sarah Butler, Christian Nelson, Joshua Nelson, Faith Nelson, Owen Garner and Joseph Garner; sister, Carol Ann Thrower of Boynton Beach, Fla; nephew, Jay Thrower; niece, Venetia Thrower Crook; and granddogs, Anya, Vada and Maisy.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Vanlene Nelson will officiate and burial will follow at Clear Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery, Denton.
