Shanta Kumari Bhutani, of Candor, passed away January 1, 2020 at FirstHealth Hospice House in Pinehurst.
Shanta was born in India on January 5, 1932 to the late Captain and Mrs. Chaman Lal Bhutani. Shanta earned her MA degree and Law degree from the University of Lucknow, India. She traveled to the U.S. to attend UNC-CH and received her MA in Anthropology in 1962.
After graduation Shanta moved to Candor and began working as an intern Juvenile Evaluation Counselor at Samarkand Manor in Eagle Springs. Thirty-four years later she retired as a unit manager at Samarkand Manor.
The town of Candor welcomed Shanta with open arms and treated her like family. In 2017 in recognition of her commitment to beautification and preservation to the Town of Candor, December 22 was designated as Shanta Bhutani Day. During her retirement, Shanta served as an ombudsmen where she enjoyed advocating for nursing home residents. She enjoyed attending the Town of Candor Board meetings and working at the Peach Festival each year. Her passion for travel began at an early age and continued throughout her life.
Shanta was preceded in death by a brother. She is survived by a brother, Mool Bhutani and wife Anita, and nephew, Anish, who live in England.
Her family thanks the staff at the FirstHealth Hospice House for their compassionate care of Shanta.
A celebration of Shanta's life will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 15 at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home in Candor. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to FirstHealth Hospice, 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374.
