Montgomery County Commissioner Dana Dawson requested the board pull a budget amendment for additional funds in the amount of $349,000, needed for the Food Pantry project, from the consent agenda during the March meeting of county commissioners. The Food Pantry is a joint project between the Council on Aging, the county and the towns. The new facility will be available for use by food pantries in all towns and will allow for a new dedicated location for the Council on Aging food distribution program. Their current location in Star is in major disrepair.
At the time of approval by the towns and the county, it was also stated that the facility will also be used as a feeding location in an emergency, as well as for cooking demonstrations by the Montgomery County Agricultural Extension Service, the Backpack Pals program and other groups.
