Troy, NC, April 5, 2021—The Uwharrie National Forest is planning to conduct a 380-acre prescribed burn today, April 5, in Montgomery county near the communities of Pinson, Russell Mine and Ophir. This burn is being conducted in coordination with the North Carolina Forest Service. The goal of the burn is to reduce the amount of fuel on the forest floor to prevent wildfires. Consideration for firefighter and public safety is the highest priority. The Russell Mine area will be temporarily closed during burn operations. The public should be aware of the potential for smoke in the area along with firefighter traffic.A helicopter will be assisting with the burn operations.
