Cornelia "Nickie" Spinks

Cornelia "Nickie" Spinks, age 74, of Boone, passed away Wednesday, September 16, 2020, at Watauga Medical Center.

After teaching music for five years at Wingate College, Wingate, Nickie and Will moved to Boone in May of 1973. In 1974, she accepted the position of choir director at Three Forks Baptist Church in Boone. Quickly, her love for the church members became more like the love for family. Nickie took a 10-year leave during the late 1990s – early 2000s; however, in all, she was the director of music for 34 years at Three Forks Baptist Church.

Nickie had a voice for performing and at times shared her talent with the Blue Ridge Community Theatre. In 1979 Nickie began singing and acting in “Horn in the West.” She performed in the role of Widow Howard for many summers. The preservation of “Horn in the West” and “Hickory Ridge Homestead” had been incredibly important to her.

During the early 1980s, Nickie taught music and led the choral group, the Highlanders, at Lees McRae College in Banner Elk. Dear friends and special bonds were formed during the years she was there.

In 1987 Nickie started Highland Tours Inc. She enjoyed taking friends and family on trips. Many have traveled with her from Nova Scotia to New Orleans and the Outer Banks of North Carolina to the Ozarks. There have been many eighth-grade school trips to Washington, D.C., Orlando and Williamsburg. Making school trips memorable for students was her priority and she loved sharing history with the students. She also dedicated several years to Green Valley Elementary School’s PTA.

Nickie was genuine, sincere and generous. Her creativity and talents will be forever present on our lives and in our hearts. Nickie’s greatest love has been her grandchildren, Three Forks Baptist Church and directing choir. She was an incredibly strong woman, who is now directing the heavenly choir and in full charge.

Well done good and faithful servant.

She is survived by her husband, Will Spinks of Boone; one daughter, Emily Jo Spinks Church and husband Jason of Boone; one son, Billy Spinks and wife Amy of Huntsville, Alabama; one granddaughter, Maysen Spinks of Huntsville, Alabama; four grandsons, Tucker Church of Boone, Harris Spinks of Huntsville, Alabama, Quinton Church of Boone and Morgan Spinks of Huntsville, Alabama.
